Rob Rock - photoshoot 178

Rob Rock is known as the voice of melodic metal. He has many impressive titles to his name, with bands such as MARS, Joshua, Angelica, Impellitteri and Driver. Even solo, he has made four albums that have brought him success. But in recent years it's become somewhat quiet around Rob. Where he is currently doing?

How are you? Is it already a little spring there? And how are Liza and Alexander?

Spring is here! Nice hot lately here in Daytona Beach. With my family is doing well, we stay busy.

We have not heard much more from you lately. Have you been busy with Impellitteri, or Driver? What did you do?

I have lately done some recordings. Not with my band, but studio recordings for musicians I respect and admire. I did not so long ago entered the Avalon Opera Timo Tolkki. I got there six numbers sung and soon after the album is released. Timo is already working on the sequel, but the first shot was fun to do and I think the songs on that album very nicely.

I just finished a few songs for a Japanese guitarist there soon will release his solo album. He is a guitarist of the younger generation which I'm sure he's going to go far in the near future. And now I hear you, but it's still to early to tell who they are exactly. You'll see by the end of the year.

You're in the Driver and bands Impellitteri and sometimes you do vocals for other projects. Then you should have a decent busy schedule! Do you find it difficult to combine all this? Do you have enough time to be with your family?

Rob Rock Singing

Sometimes it is indeed very busy. Besides all the hustle I'm working on a new solo album. I collect ideas for songs, but I'm happy no deadline to pick up, so I'll be there every now and then on again. So I can fit nicely in the time I spent on my other band projects and collaborations as well I can still spend time with my family. Raising a child of eight is quite a challenge, but I cherish the time we spend together now.

Your last solo album dates from 2007, which is nearly seven years ago. Go make your own again soon, or do you too busy with your other bands and projects?

I am going to make another solo album. I'm thinking a CD sponsored by the fans, but I first started writing the songs before going to focus on it. My Swedish band is ready in the starting blocks to record the album. We will see each other in July when we perform at the Bang Your Head festival in Germany.

If you're on tour with Impellitteri, you get the opportunity to witness to your faith in Jesus Christ to the fans go?

Hell yes. My testimony is in my lyrics and my walk. If the fans come and talk to me, I love to answer questions about spiritual matters. It is very satisfying for me when the fans really fully understand what I stand for.

Let's go back to the 80s. You then made an album for Joshua Perahia. How was that? You got a nice anecdote? Do you have contact with Joshua?

Joshua Band with Rob Rock

We're still friends. We had in the 80s a great band and we rehearsed many months before we Intense Defense shots in Dieter Dierks Studios in Germany. For me it was the experience of my life, that's for sure. I remember six months in the studio and I lived there in a hotel. We have lots of great moments spent together.

The funniest moment was when we drove on a motorway where there was no speed limit, with Joshua at the wheel. Everyone was worrying as we drove slowly in the left lane and we were terrified that a hard rider us would pop back!

I am also agree with Dieter Dierks rode in his Ferrari and I never do that again! He wanted to impress me, but instead I almost did it in my pants in fear.

Same question, but Dennis Cameron's band Angelica. On the CD case they had a singer. Why did they ask you then when they had a singer?

From what I have understood is that the singer had problems in the studio and they had a deadline that had to catch them. So called their producer Ken Tamplin, who knew me even of Joshua tire me to ask if I wanted to raids and what song would do to help them to get it ready in time. I've been there only a half day, I met Dennis and we had a nice time together, though it all went pretty quickly.

Do you have a favorite Impellitteri album? What is it and why?

Impellitteri - Screaming Symphony Front Cover

I have a few favorites. Answer to the Master, Screaming Symphony and Wicked Maiden front of me above the rest. Answer sounded raw and unproduced. Screaming was a big production and really good produced by Michael Wagener. Wicked Maiden was in my opinion the best mix that we have ever had. Of course, the collection of songs on each album also plays a large part. Screaming is also packed with background vocals, so that was quite a lot of work. I like the sound and the message that we have the most beautiful have achieved with that album.

Tell me about the album you did with Fires of Babylon. How did that happen exactly?

That was an idea for a studio album by the German record label who I worked with at that time. I saw that album as an opportunity to do some heavy Christian texts and it was experimental for me. It was fun and musically different and a chance to even try a different approach.

Are you going to church regularly? You sing on stage during services?

Yes, I go to a local church. I have done some gigs with a Christian friend of mine named Armand, at the Holy Land Experience in Orlando for a live audience and television broadcast, but I have never occurred in my local church. I never really talk about my work in the church, except when specifically asked. I go there with my family. I worship my Lord and I do not like to then focus on myself.

Is it difficult for you to play as a Christian in secular bands? What is it with Impellitteri and Driver, you would call that Christian bands?

Impellitteri Band from Wicked Maiden

The bands I sit in very clean and very dedicated to their musicality. We're all serious about making music and party animal aspect of rock 'n roll is then completely disappeared. It works very well, because everyone is just themselves and we have mutual respect for each other. My definition of a "Christian" band is a band that has a Christian ministry behind them as a group. I have a ministry in myself as an individual and as a lyricist is it reflected in my lyrics. That is how we are seen as Christian bands by many people, but as far as we are always working with secular labels record labels and we did not put ourselves in the market as a Christian band.

How many times have you been in the Netherlands and with which bands? What do you think of the Netherlands?

I went there with my own Rage of Creation tour and later with the Holy Hell tour. I love the Netherlands, but I should really get to spend some more time to get to really tackle the Dutch feeling. It seems wonderful and I love the people I met there very nice.

Do you think the metal scene today is very different from 20 years ago? Are the fans different? Is it harder to reach them with a message, or even easier?

Yes, it has changed dramatically. The download generation has put considerable upside the music industry. True metal fans are still there. That is what is important, because that is a kind of family. Real metal, real hard rock will always stay alive and I think that's great! The fans are loyal and it will perhaps be more difficult to reach new fans, but new fans still come daily. Those are always surprised that they find such wonderful music they have always missed.

Carl Johan 'Calle' Grimmark

"Calle" Grimmark

How is it to work with European musicians, such as. Calle Grimmark?

That is beautiful. Real musicians, sober people who really love music. In the case of Calle and my band that keeps its great people of the Lord. My band that is so impressive and I am glad that they are still with me. I look forward to our next shot.

What are your plans for the near future? Will there soon be something nice out?

I'm working on a new solo album. I started writing new songs and I will have to figure out the rest before we start recording. I received a few offers from record labels, but no deals I really do anything with it. I'm a bit old-school and they try to draw bands with a new approach which I do not really agree. So I trust that the Lord will provide the perfect time for a way out.

Can you recommend any other artists? What is currently your favorite band?

Dream Theater - Self-Titled Record (2013)

I particularly like the new album from Dream Theater very nice. That CD runs lately in my car. I can also recommend the Avalon album. Then I sing just like I did in the 80s, somewhere in the stratosphere.

Do you also have something to say to our readers?

I hope to see you all soon, it took too long. Please come visit me at the Bang Your Head festival in July if you have the opportunity. I was there on Friday with the Axel Rudi Pell reunion and then sat with my solo band.

I want to thank you for all the support and I'll be right back, with new images and a new tour, the Lord willing.

Ever since I was fourteen I listen to Christian metal. It started with Stryper and then I started looking very actively for more white metal bands. I love to interact with them and gather news about these bands. And thus I help to spread the good news about Jesus!
