지금은 대부분의 사람들이 디지털 음원을 통해 노래를 듣기때문에 여러 아티스트의 원하는 곡들만 모아서 듣는 것은 무척이나 간편하게 해결할 수 있습니다. 하지만 Vinyl, CD, 카세트 테잎 등을 구매해서 들었던 예전에는 앨범 전체를 구매해서 자체적으로 짜집기를 하거나, 혹은 음반사의 소속 아티스트들의 특정 곡만을 모아서 만든 "컴필레이션 앨범" 혹은 "옴니버스 앨범"을 통해서만 들을 수 있었습니다. 여러 뮤지션들의 히트곡들을 모아두거나 혹은 특정한 테마를 바탕으로 만들어지는 컴필레이션 앨범은 상업적인 특징을 많이 지녔기 때문에 팝이나 대중음악에서 많이 볼 수 있었습니다. 어찌됐든 컴필레이션 앨범을 통해 음반사에서는 소속된 아티스트를 홍보하면서 음반 판매도 함께 높일 수 있기 때문에 선호되는 것이고, 소비자 입장에서도 가성비 좋은 음반이면서도 좋아하는 곡과 잘 알려지지않은 뮤지션들의 음악도 함께 들을 수 있는 계기가 되기 때문에 음반시장이 살아있던 시기인 2000년 초반까지 꾸준히 발매되었습니다. 물론 이로인해 정규앨범을 소비자가 구매하지 않는다는 양면성이 있는 앨범이기도 합니다.

개인지 늑대인지는 모르겠으나 광폭한 동물이 [Metal Maniacs]라는 앨범 타이틀을 물고 있는 본 앨범은 1997년에 발매되었으며, 서울음반(현-로엔 엔터테인먼트)이 자사 라이센스 발매되는 뮤지션들의 곡들을 모은 앨범입니다. 이 음반을 사면 White Lion의 [Pride] 앨범 커버(백사자 재킷)를 인쇄한 티셔츠도 선물로 함께 주었던 것 같은데 그 티셔츠를 받으려고 1997년 당시에 교보문고 핫트랙스에서 구매한 기억이 있습니다. 개인적으로 13번 트랙인 키스케의 솔로 앨범의 발라드곡 'Do I Remember A Life?'를 못들어 보신분께 추천드립니다.

[Heavy Metal Maestros]는 Sony Music에 소속된 아티스트의 곡들을 담았습니다. 헤어 메틀/LA 메틀 계열의 곡들이 많이 눈에 띄네요. Autograph의 'Turn Up The Radio'는 배철수의 음악캠프에서 한 코너의 시그널로 수년동안 꾸준히 사용되었다고 합니다. 언제 들어도 신나는 Quiet Riot의 'Cum On Feel The Noise'로 앨범이 시작되는데 고인이 된 Kevin DuBrow의 우렁찬 성대가 그립네요. 임펠리테리의 유일한 Sony Music 발매 앨범인 [Stand in Line]에서 'Since You've Been Gone'이 담겨 있습니다.

소니뮤직 코리아가 발매한 기타리스트 중심의 컴필레이션 앨범입니다. 앨범명과 커버가 꽤 독특합니다. 앨범명을 보니 [Heavy Metal Maestros] 앨범과 함께 'Maestros' 시리즈로 발매한 듯 하네요. 몇 곡을 제외하고 대부분이 기타 인스트루멘틀로 채워져 있으며, 저처럼 기타 인스트루멘틀을 좋아하신다면 대부분의 곡들을 아마 아실 껍니다. 그야말로 필청 기타 연주곡들로만 선곡된 앨범입니다.

포니캐년코리아가 2001년도에 발매한 2CD 컴필레이션 앨범 'Metal Kid' 입니다. 인터넷 서칭을 해보니 'For The Best Headbangers' 혹은 'The Greatest Heavy Metal Compilation'이라는 부재가 붙어있네요. 90년대 말에서 2000년도 초반, 당시 음악적 흐름인 유럽피언 스피드 메틀(우리나라에서는 주로 '멜로딕 메틀'이라 불렀습니다)의 곡들이 다수 포진되어 있으며, 블랙 메틀의 곡들도 눈에 띄네요. 오래된 히트곡들 모음 형태가 아닌 본 컴필레이션 앨범 발매 당시의 여러 뮤지션들의 근작 앨범에서 선곡되어 있습니다.

발매 시기가 오래되어 온라인상에 제대로된 앨범 커버를 찾는 것 조차 힘든 앨범이네요. 앨범 타이틀은 "Love Ballads" 이지만 자세히는 Love "Rock" Ballads로 표현할 수 있는 앨범입니다. 선곡표에서 보듯이 시대를 막론한 락계의 명발라드 곡만 모아놓은 앨범입니다. 앨범 반응이 좋았는지(혹은 처음부터 기획되었는지) "Love Ballads - Vol. 2"도 이후에 발매되었습니다. [Platinum Rock Ballad] 앨범과 달리 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow'가 제일 마지막 트랙으로 구성되어 있습니다.

서울음반(현-로엔 엔터테인먼트)에서 기획되어 2000년에 발매된 앨범입니다. 대중적으로 많이 알려진 락 발라드 모음곡 형태가 아닌 발매시기의 Victor Entertainment 소속사 뮤지션들 곡들이 다수 수록되어 있습니다. 아래는 지금은 사라진 사이트, www.phonograph.co.kr의 앨범 리뷰입니다.

숨겨진 1인치... 숨겨진 락 발라드 명곡을 찾아라! Rocka Bella!!!

작년 8월 독특한 자켓의 락발라드 모음집 'Metal Fantasia'가 서울음반에서 발매되었다. 그러나, 홍보나 아티스트들의 인지도의 부재로 인해 흥행(?)에는 실패하였지만, 골수 매니아들에게는 소중한 보석과도 같은 앨범이었다.

그리고 아마도 같은 디자이너의 작품으로 여겨지는 락발라드모음집 'Rocka Bella'가 발매되었다. 역시 이번 앨범역시 국내에 인지도가 높은 아티스트는 그리 많지 않다. 그러나, 앨범을 플레이어에 걸게 되면 70여분간 16곡의 진귀한 락 발라드 곡들을 편안하게 들을 수 있다.

이 앨범의 매력이라면, 어디서나 들을 수 있는 락 발라드곡이 아니라는데에 있다. 알만한 곡으론 캔서스의 대표곡 'Dust In The Wind'. 그러나 이곡도 원곡은 아니고 런던 심포니와의 협연을 한 앨범에서 따온 곡이다. 물론, 원곡의 감동보다 더한 감동을 받을 수 있다.(필자 보증!!)

그외에 ELP의 'C'est La Vie' 정도가 그나마 대중에게 알려진 곡이 아닐까? 99년 발매된 ELP의 베스트앨범에 수록되었던 곡이다.

앨범 수록곡을 살펴 보면, 미국 프로그레시브의 거장 스틱스의 근작인 'While There's Still Time', 과격한 무대매너와 특이한 이벤트로 주목받았던 WASP의 정말 특이한(그들의 이미지와 맞지않는 아름다운 발라드) 'Hold On To My Heart'가 앨범의 처음을 시작한다.

바이퍼의 Moonlight는 앙드레 마토스의 보컬이 베토벤의 월광 소나타의 선율과 어우러져 드라마틱한 느낌을 전해주고 있다. 아이언 메이든의 보컬이었던 브루스 디킨슨의 또 다른 모습. 아르페지오한 느낌의 어쿠스틱 기타의 선율로 시작되는 Arc Of Space도 들어 보아야 될 곡이다.

헬로윈의 전 보컬인 마이클 키스케의 첫 솔로 앨범에 수록되었던 'Always'는 고인이 된 헬로윈의 드러머 잉고를 기리며 만든 곡으로 그의 하이톤의 목소리가 최대한 절제되어 나오는 목소리가 아름답다.

그외에도 멜로디 하드락을 추구하는 팬텀스 오페라의 Have You Ever Been Alone?, D.C. Cooper의 Freedom, 헬로윈의 후기 대표 발라드인 Forever And One(Neverland). 임펠리테리의 Paradise 등 주옥같은, 그러나 숨겨졌던 락발라드 곡들이 빼곡이 들어차 있다.

특히 국내엔 많이 알려지지 않은 밴드이지만, 헬로윈의 현 보컬리스트 앤디 데리스가 몸담고 있던 독일밴드 Pink Cream 69의 피아노와 현악 오케스트라가 가미된 아름다운 발라드 Gone Again과 본국이나 유럽보다 일본에서 폭발적인 인기를 얻고 있는 멜로딕 하드락 밴드 테라노바의 How는 이 앨범의 숨겨진 더욱 깊숙이 숨겨진 곡으로 필청곡이다.

Who comes to mind when you hear the term "guitar legends"? Is it Jimi Hendrix, Django Reinhardt, Eric Clapton, Andrés Segovia or Chet Atkins? How about Vinnie Moore, Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert, Chris Impellitteri or Micky Moody? If you replied more favorably to the first list, then this compilation will likely disappoint you, because they're not on it. But if the latter names make your hair stand on end, you've come to the right place. While the word "legend" is undeniably a criminally overused one, conveniently trotted out to sell, well, products like this one, there are still times when its use should be banned, like, well, when naming products like this one. "Legend" implies that the person being so bestowed is familiar to the vast majority of people, even those with only a passing interest in the area in which the bestowed is considered a legend. Your grandma may not know the difference between B.B. King, Eddie Van Halen and Chuck Berry, but chances are she'll know they're all legends (and good for her if she does!). But she won't find them here. Spectacular as they may be, she'd probably draw a blank if you mentioned Robin George, Bernie Marsden and Luke Morley, all of whom contribute to this package. Not legends, sorry. While it's unquestionably true that the three CDs assembled here contain a number of certifiably sparkling guitarists playing indisputably mind-numbing guitar, many of them will be legendary mainly to those who frequent the rarefied worlds of guitar magazines and hard rock websites. Guitar Legends leans overwhelmingly in that direction: loud, fast, electric guitarists working within the subgenres of metal and prog rock, with no thought of looking to other musical areas. No one says it has to, but why not be more specific and call the set "Some Really Hot Guitarists Who You May or May Not Have Heard of Playing Mostly Hard Rock and Who Happen to All Be Males"? Anyway, semantics out of the way, you may be wondering if there are there any certified guitar legends on Guitar Legends. You bet! Carlos Santana, Steve Howe, Peter Green, Peter Frampton (a live "Baby I Love Your Way" from 2000), Rush's Alex Lifeson and maybe even Leslie West and Ritchie Blackmore (heard here with Rainbow) qualify. Pretty darn popular and influential but arguably not quite legendary: Free's late Paul Kossoff, Ronnie James Dio, Richie Sambora (with Bruce Foster, not Bon Jovi), Jethro Tull's Martin Barre and Michael Schenker. And then there's Gary Rossington, whose name may still elicit blank stares all these years later, but without whom Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird," which leads off disc three and still defines Southern rock if not classic rock itself, would not be the persistent anthem that it is. Which just goes to prove that you don't have to be a "guitar legend" to play legendary guitar.
