For almost six years, Chris Impellitteri has had his fans wait for a new album, but with "Venom" the guy finally gave us the long-sighted stainless steel device.
How it came to this publication pause and with which the guitar-wizard was engaged in that, however, had not to be questioned for long. The string artist also turned out to be a very talkative contemporary, and, as if shot out of the gun.
Respect! "Venom" is powerful! What was your intention? Did you have an idea of where the "toxic" journey should go?
We had a common vision and wanted to record as a band the best possible album for us. As an additional requirement, we had also imposed ourselves on the fact that all our stylistic preferences were combined and contained as a homogeneous mixture. I know you will always hear something like this, but in our case, it was really the focus that we were mainly trying to impress with the songs. This is the only way to make sure the fans find the part as good.
But you have already left your time, hmm?
It may be a long time since IMPELLITTERI came out with an album to the start, already clear. But whoever thinks we were lying on the rotten skin, is wrong! After the release of our last album we were on tour in the States and played on the "Sweden Rock". After that it should also start with the songwriting for the current album. A call from SONY MUSIC provided the band quite abruptly a work break.
Because?
The label was about to make a band like Japanese "anime cartoon films" and was looking for a guitarist. At first, I was rather skeptical because I was not really interested in cartoons of this kind, but when I was told who was going to take part in this company, which was called ANIMETAL USA, I did not have to think about it . I've worked with some of the world's best players, including Graham Bonnet, to work on a project with Rudy Sarzo and Mike Vescara. In itself, I thought it would be a one-time and only a matter of the Japanese market, but the interest was very big worldwide, so I can even betray that there will be another album.
Beware of toxic!
Roger that. Among other things, you did a "dashboard metal-guitar hero" together with the current drummer Jon Dette, and also singer Rob Rock was busy in the meantime. That means IMELLITTERI were almost broke and had to be more or less "reanimated", or not?
In a way already. Since Rob used this time for DRIVER and his Soloband, everything fit well, and we were able to "live" all of them. As a result, the motivation for IMPELLITTERI once again rose, and we were able to dedicate ourselves 100% to the "Venom" process. I would add, however, that although I am responsible for most of the ideas and melodies, the "band-feeling" has once again been incredibly important. Only Rob was able to put on the numbers the icing on the cake with his song melodies and lyrics. I do not want to miss this collective, since I can still be valued as a virtuoso!
This is because "comics" in musical form can not even be found on "Venom".
Exactly! Cartoon music as in ANIMETAL is not to be found on the new spin, but exclusively Heavy Metal in Reinkultur. The title is quite a program, because we feel the tracks are real "poisoners", which will also work on the stage. My goal now is to finally perform with you in Germany. It can not be that I have never been able to play with you in the business after so long. Something must change!
We are also of the same opinion, Chris, and you are pressing for this - quite selflessly, of course - all thumbs!

Nahezu sechs Jahre hat Chris Impellitteri seine Fans auf ein neues Album warten lassen, mit »Venom« verabreicht uns der Kerl nun aber endlich das langersehnte Edelstahl-Gerät.
Wie es zu dieser Veröffentlichungspause kam und womit der Gitarren-Hexer in jener beschäftigt war, mußte jedoch erst gar nicht lange hinterfragt werden. Der Saitenartist entpuppte sich nämlich auch als überaus redseliger Zeitgenosse und legte wie aus der Pistole geschossen los.
Respekt! »Venom« knallt mächtig! Was war denn Eure Intention? Hattet Ihr eine Vorstellung davon, wohin die "giftige" Reise gehen sollte?
Wir hatten eine gemeinsame Vision und wollten als Band das für uns bestmögliche Album aufnehmen. Als zusätzliche Anforderung hatten wir uns noch auferlegt, daß all unsere stilistischen Vorlieben zusammengefaßt und als homogene Mixtur darauf enthalten sein müssen. Ich weiß, so etwas werdet Ihr immer wieder hören, in unserem Fall war es allerdings tatsächlich so, daß wir den Fokus vorwiegend darauf gelegt hatten, uns selbst mit den Songs beeindrucken zu können. Nur dadurch waren wir sicher, daß die Fans das Teil ebenso gut finden.
Aber viiieeell Zeit habt Ihr Euch schon gelassen, hmm?
Es mag vielen verdammt lange vorkommen, daß IMPELLITTERI zuletzt 2009 mit einem Album an den Start gegangen sind, schon klar. Doch wer meint, wir wären auf der faulen Haut gelegen, irrt gewaltig! Nach der Veröffentlichung unseres letzten Albums waren wir zunächst in den Staaten auf Tournee und haben auf dem "Sweden Rock" gespielt. Danach sollte es auch gleich mit dem Songwriting für das aktuelle Album losgehen. Ein Anruf von SONY MUSIC verschaffte der Band jedoch recht abrupt eine Schaffenspause.
Weil?
Das Label war im Begriff, eine Band nach Art von japanischen "Anime-Zeichentrickfilmen" auf die Beine zu stellen und war auf der Suche nach einem Gitarristen. Zunächst war ich eher skeptisch, da ich mich nicht wirklich für derlei Cartoons interessiere, doch als man mir mitteilte, wer außer mir noch bei diesem Unternehmen, das den Namen ANIMETAL USA tragen sollte, mit von der Partie war, brauchte ich nicht lange zu überlegen. Ich habe zwar bereits mit Könnern wie Graham Bonnet zusammengearbeitet, an einem Projekt mit Rudy Sarzo und Mike Vescara arbeiten zu dürfen, reizte mich aber auch sehr, und so kam die Sache recht rasch ins Rollen. An sich dachte ich zwar, es würde sich um eine einmalige und nur auf den japanischen Markt abzielende Angelegenheit handeln, doch das Interesse war weltweit sehr groß, und deshalb kann ich inzwischen sogar schon verraten, daß es auch noch ein weiteres Album geben wird.
Verstanden. Du hast unter anderem gemeinsam mit dem aktuellen Drummer Jon Dette einen auf "Zeichentrick-Metal-Guitar Hero" gemacht, und auch Sänger Rob Rock war inzwischen anderweitig beschäftigt. Das heißt IMELLITTERI lagen quasi brach und mußten mehr oder weniger "reanimiert" werden, oder doch nicht?
In gewisser Weise schon. Da auch Rob diese Zeit für DRIVER und seine Soloband nutzte, paßte aber dennoch alles gut zusammen, und wir konnten uns allesamt "ausleben". Dadurch stieg in gewisser Weise auch bei uns allen wieder die Motivation für IMPELLITTERI erneut, und wir konnten uns zu 100 Prozent dem Entstehungsprozeß von »Venom« widmen. Hinzufügen möchte ich allerdings, daß ich zwar für den Großteil der Ideen und Melodien verantwortlich bin, das "Band-Feeling" aber einmal mehr unglaublich wichtig gewesen ist. Erst Rob vermochte mit seinen Gesangsmelodien und Texte den Nummern das Sahnehäubchen aufzusetzen. Dieses Kollektiv möchte ich nicht missen, da kann man mich noch so sehr als Virtuosen schätzen!
Macht Sinn, denn "Comics" in musikalischer Form lassen sich auf »Venom« nicht mal ansatzweise finden.
Exakt! Cartoon-Mucke wie bei ANIMETAL findet man auf dem neuen Dreher nicht, sondern ausschließlich Heavy Metal in Reinkultur. Der Titel ist durchaus als Programm zu betrachten, denn wir empfinden die Tracks als echte "Giftspritzen", die auch auf der Bühne funktionieren werden. Mein Ziel ist es nun, endlich auch einmal bei Euch in Deutschland aufzutreten. Es kann doch wohl nicht sein, daß ich nach so langer Zeit im Business noch nie bei Euch spielen konnte. Daran muß sich etwas ändern!
Dieser Meinung sind wir auch, Chris, und drücken Dir dafür - ganz uneigennützig natürlich - alle Däumchen!
